Weight Loss Hypnosis Without Perfection

Weight loss hypnosis is used with compassion - not perfection. Perfection is often a built in guarantee for failure, especially when it comes to weight loss and hypnosis. In my Seattle weight loss office of Slender For Life™ I teach clients how to do hypnosis with the Light Switch self-hypnosis technique. This is just one self-hypnosis technique, there are many variations of excellent hypnosis techniques. The other day in Slender For Life™ weight loss session a client was talking about self-hypnosis and was beating herself up because she wasn’t doing it perfectly. Now mind you this woman has had two weeks experience at learning how to do hypnosis and from what she described to me I thought she had done at outstanding job. You see there isn’t just one self-hypnosis technique, the variations hypnosis techniques are limitless.

We talked through what she was doing and I told her my flute story. I love the flute music of R. Carlos Nakai and have many of his CDs. Years ago I bought a wooden flute made by a Native American and having no musical training or talent had the idea that I would learn to play it. After a few days of squeaking and squawking and not sounding like Nakai, I gave up, set it on a book shelf and occasionally dusted it off. It sat on the book shelf unused for years.

One day, while listening to Nakai, I picked up my flute and it still squeaked and squawked. But, I had an ah-ha moment. The obvious occurred to me. I will never sound like Nakai and that is OK. If I want Nakai music, I will play one of my CDs. And, it is one of my pleasures to on occasion pick up the flute and play it - and yes, it still squeaks and squawks and that is OK too! I have learned to enjoy my flute and my flute playing in all its imperfection.

I now think of my flute story numerous times throughout my life. It used to be that if I didn’t think that I could do something perfectly on the first time, I didn’t try. If I did try and failed on the first attempt, I quit. Today, I let of having to do it perfectly the first time. I no longer let that be a reason to keep me from trying.

When I teach clients how to do hypnosis with the Light Switch self-hypnosis I urge them to adapt this method so that it works for them. I focus on teaching instant hypnosis so that you can create positive changes in your life without having to do it perfectly.

Dr. John McDougall writes in  A Starch-based Diet Supports Spontaneous Healing: Atherosclerosis, Arthritis, and Sometimes Cancer “If your health is getting worse it is not because your body is failing you—efforts to heal never stop—not for a moment. The reason for your continued decline is because the damage is ongoing. For disease to progress, injury must outpace healing.  Reversing disease is simply a matter of turning this scenario around.  To be specific, stop the ongoing injury, which is usually self-induced.  (However, there is a point reached where disease is irreversible, because the injury is too severe and/or the body is too worn out to recover. Fortunately, few of my patients are in that much trouble.)

Over 75% of the chronic illnesses in developed countries are due to repeated injuries from the fork and spoon.  Three and more times a day damaging quantities of fat, protein, cholesterol, and chemicals are ingested at the “dinner table”—better known these days as the “bag of fast food.”  The beef, chicken, cheese, refined flours, and sugars are sources of present day malnutrition—excesses and deficiencies of vital nutrients plague these foods.

Weight Loss ~ Does It Have To Be Hard?

In Weight Loss Crazy Making I told about a client who had been sharing with me about the peace and calmness she was experiencing with Slender For Life™ rather than the crazy making feelings she had experienced previously when she dieted. This week this same client came in telling me that she kept having to pinch herself because her weight loss was just too easy with Slender For Life™.  She just couldn’t believe that it was real.

I asked her if it was OK that losing weight was easy and she wasn’t sure. It was scary for her that is was easy because she wasn’t sure that it was real. Even though this woman has already released 30 pounds her fear was that it wouldn’t last because it has been so easy. Previously for this woman, as it is for most of us, dieting was hard. It seems that as humans we have a belief that in order for something to be powerful, effective and life changing, it has to be hard.

The Hypnosis Cure

The Hypnosis CureThe July 2009 issue of Ladies Home Journal has an a great article called The Hypnosis Cure. “Don’t laugh — this drug-free treatment has gained respect from doctors who treat everything from hot flashes to surgical pain. And it has helped people lose weight and quit smoking.” I love seeing articles on hypnotherapy in the press as it helps educate people on the powers of hypnosis treatment. In The Hypnosis Cure, author Daryn Eller writes: “Have you ever had the experience of being so immersed in a book you’re reading that you don’t notice somebody walk into the room? That’s a trance,” says Ted Grossbart, PhD, senior clinical supervisor at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center. During a trance your mind is fully focused on something that you are imagining at the direction of your therapist — a memory or future goal. In this state you’re more open to imagery and suggestion, but only to images and suggestions you are comfortable with. Neither a pendant-swinging Svengali nor a psychologist in a lab coat can make you do something that you don’t want to do.

When you’re in a trance you feel everything you’re asked to visualize more vividly and intensely. Whether your goal is to quit smoking, lose weight, or get over a phobia, the trance state allows you to experience, as if it were real, how it feels to resist those urges: breathing fresh, smoke-free air; craving healthy foods; or sitting on a plane without feeling anxious. After the hypnotherapy session those images continue to resonate, helping you resist the inclination to smoke, eat fast food, or panic on the tarmac.

The “realness” of hypnotic suggestion can cause physiological, not just behavioral, changes. That’s why it helps with medical conditions as diverse as irritable bowel syndrome, skin conditions, and stress-related infertility.”

As the director of Slender For Life™ and as a Slender For Life™ weight loss coach one of the great joys and pleasures I continually receive from my Slender For Life™ weight loss clients is the stories and experiences that they share in their weight loss journey. Recently one client was sharing with me about how thrilled she is with the success she is having and how well it is going for her.
